Training camp season means it’s also roster bubble season and even though, it is still very early there are many storylines to follow for the Kansas City Chiefs. Mainly, those storylines are going to be about the roster status of players on the bubble.
The position group with the most intrigue is probably wide receiver given all the new faces in the room and the amount of competition. We’ve already heard about Kadarius Toney’s transition to becoming a possible running back according to head coach Andy Reid in what is most likely an attempt to find him a roster spot.
Another name that everyone is going to have their eyes on closely throughout training camp is Skyy Moore. Moore is coming off a massive disappointment of a 2023 season as he totaled just 21 catches for 244 yards and 1 touchdown in what was supposed to be a major step forward for him. The wide receiver room as a whole struggled as we all remember which only magnified Moore’s struggles as the Chiefs looked everywhere for answers.

Typically speaking, it is rare for a second-round draft pick from just two years ago to already be in roster bubble discussions even with being a big disappointment because they’re cheap and under team control. You don’t get much from cutting players like that. However, the Chiefs went out and attacked the wide receiver position to ensure that what happened last year never happened again. That puts Moore at an increased risk of being cut by the end of preseason if he doesn’t show any progress.
Unfortunately for Moore, early returns haven’t been very good. There have already been many clips or reports on social media showing him dropping a pass or getting jammed on a route. Of course, it’s important not to read too much into individual clips from training camp in July, but these are the same issues that plagued Moore last season.
By all accounts, Moore is also coming off a poor performance during OTAs earlier this offseason, so he really needs a strong training camp performance to solidify his spot on the team. Don’t discount the idea that the Chiefs could still add to this wide receiver room as well after cutdowns. That would also require pushing someone already on the team out.
When you consider the fact that Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy are primed to make an impact, Rashee Rice isn’t going anywhere, and Justyn Ross, Justin Watson, Nikko Remigio, and Kadarius Toney are all still pushing, things are starting to trend downwards for Moore. The Chiefs probably won’t be keeping seven receivers again this year so roster spots are getting harder to come by and Moore has to start separating himself from the pack.
If Skyy Moore doesn’t start making a serious push now in practice and wowing folks in the preseason, he may be gone sooner than any of us initially anticipated.
