TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Zoo is in mourning after the loss of a cherished resident, Spike the Cape Porcupine, who lived a remarkable 22 years. His passing was announced on April 24, leaving a void in the hearts of zoo staff and visitors alike.
Spike arrived at the Topeka Zoo in 2003 and quickly became a favorite, not just for his unique personality but also for his entertaining eating habits. Known for holding food between his front paws, Spike made a delightful sight as he lounged and munched on his favorite treats. His evolving tastes kept the dedicated animal care team on their toes, with his preferences shifting from year to year. Consistent favorites throughout his life included corn, watermelon, peeled kiwi, and honey.
Each year, Spike's birthday celebrations were a highlight at the zoo. This year, his “Feeling 22” themed party, inspired by Taylor Swift’s hit song, honored his extraordinary lifespan, which surpassed the median life expectancy for Cape Porcupines by over seven years. It was a fitting tribute to a beloved animal who brought joy to so many.
“Spike will be deeply missed by our team,” said Joe Hood, a zookeeper who had the privilege of working closely with Spike. “His soft vocalizations and enthusiasm for snacks were a joy to experience every morning. I’m grateful to have worked with him for so long.” This sentiment echoes throughout the zoo community, showcasing the strong bonds formed between animals and their caretakers.
