Chattanooga Zoo’s Heartbreaking Loss of Beloved Chimpanzee Artemus
The Chattanooga Zoo is grappling with the untimely loss of Artemus, one of its cherished male chimpanzees. In a heartfelt Facebook post, the zoo shared that Artemus stopped breathing during a routine medical check-up last week, leading to a tragic end for this well-loved resident.
On what was supposed to be a routine check-up day, the veterinary team at the Chattanooga Zoo found themselves facing an unexpected crisis. During procedures, they were alarmed to find no detectable heartbeat. Despite immediate efforts, including CPR, Artemus passed away, leaving staff and spectators in shock.

Initial autopsy results indicated that the right side of Artemus' heart was both enlarged and dilated, alarming symptoms that had not been present in previous screenings. The staff noted that Artemus showed no signs or symptoms that would have hinted at this underlying issue, raising concerns and sadness throughout both the zoo and the larger community.
The loss has also affected the chimpanzee troop, as zoo officials reported they are currently observing more reserved behavior from the remaining chimps. "We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this difficult time," the zoo stated, highlighting the emotional toll both on the animals and the human team.

Zoo representatives have assured the community that updates regarding Artemus' cause of death will be shared as they become available. The heartfelt support from the community has been overwhelming, with many coming forth to express their condolences and share fond memories of Artemus, highlighting the strong bond that humans often form with these intelligent animals.
As we reflect on the life of Artemus, it's a reminder of the precious nature of life and the fragility that comes with it, especially within the confines of a zoo.
