Brazilian Port Takes a Sustainable Approach to Wildlife Conservation and Security
In an innovative blend of technology and environmental stewardship, Ferroport, the operator of the iron ore terminal at the Port of Açu in São João da Barra, Brazil, has recently rolled out cutting-edge video surveillance solutions from Axis Communications. This initiative not only enhances security but also plays a vital role in wildlife conservation, making it a significant case study in balancing industrial operations with ecological responsibility.
Ferroport's new surveillance system consists of state-of-the-art cameras capable of capturing high-quality images during nighttime operations. This advancement allows the company to operate with minimal artificial lighting, reducing its environmental footprint. By doing so, Ferroport has embraced a sustainable approach that aligns closely with their mission to protect the surrounding ecosystem, particularly the endangered species that inhabit the area.
Marcelo Oliveira, Property Security Coordinator at Ferroport, emphasized the company's commitment to integrating security and conservation. “With 206 cameras monitoring offshore, operational, and perimeter areas, our system was prepared to detect unauthorized vessels during the day. However, effective surveillance at night posed significant challenges due to the lack of natural light,” Oliveira explained. The partnership with Axis Communications has enabled the port to achieve this task without compromising environmental integrity.

In adhering to Brazilian port standards, which mandate 24/7 video surveillance, Ferroport has not only complied with regulatory requirements but also fortified its wildlife conservation efforts. Since 2008, the company has successfully protected over 1.3 million loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings, showcasing its pivotal role in local wildlife preservation. In addition, Ferroport has initiated tree-planting efforts, contributing to the planting of 66,000 trees in just six months.
Winicius Corali, Regional Sales Manager for Axis Communications, highlighted the collaborative nature of this project. “While enhancing security capabilities was essential for Ferroport, the company was committed to not sacrificing its conservation goals. This partnership is a testament to how technology can be employed effectively while still maintaining the values of environmental sustainability,” Corali stated.
This pioneering combination of surveillance technology and ecological awareness sets a profound precedent for other ports around the globe. Ferroport is leading the way in demonstrating that industrial efficiency can be achieved hand-in-hand with ecological balance.
