Pittsburgh Zoo Welcomes New Male Lion Hondo
The Pittsburgh Zoo is buzzing with excitement as it welcomes a new member to its family—Hondo, an 8-year-old African lion who is quickly becoming a favorite among the female lions.
Arriving from Idaho Falls Zoo, Hondo is set to be a companion for lionesses Abana and Scarlett, who have been at the zoo since 2019. Following the death of their previous mate Kit in 2023, the zoo was eager to introduce a new male with robust genes and real-world experience living with females. According to the zoo, Hondo emerged as the ideal candidate, being dubbed "the most eligible bachelor" by the staff.

Introducing a new lion to an existing pride is no easy task. The zoo explained that it is a complex process, often taking between three months and five years for the females to fully accept a new member. However, initial signs are promising for Hondo. "He is good with females having lived with his mother and two younger sisters," noted Kelsey Forbes, curator of mammals at the zoo. "Here in Pittsburgh, Hondo is a perfect gentleman, and the ladies are obsessed with him."
As Hondo acclimates to his new environment and potential pride mates, he and the lionesses will alternate in displaying their personalities in the outdoor habitat. The zoo staff have observed friendly gestures, such as grooming and head rubbing, which are positive indicators of bonding. It’s important to note that some behaviors—like swatting, hissing, and biting—may unsettle visitors, but the staff assures such interactions are normal and part of the adjustment process.
The zoo is also keenly observing vocal interactions. Notably, lions typically roar at sunrise and sunset, and the female lions have already begun responding to Hondo’s calls. As Forbes quipped, the potential for the pride to expand and include lion cubs will ultimately depend on the dynamics between Hondo and the lionesses. "That remains up to them!" she stated, leaving the audience curious and hopeful for the future.
As zoos worldwide adapt and strive for a better understanding of animal behaviors, Pittsburgh Zoo's approach with Hondo not only highlights the complexities of animal introductions but also the joy and anticipation that comes with it. Can Hondo become a father in the near future? Only time will tell. What are your thoughts on Hondo's new role in the pride? Feel free to leave your comments below!
