Blank Park Zoo Set To Break Ground On Exciting New Lion Exhibit

Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines is making headlines this month as it prepares to break ground on a revolutionary project that will significantly enhance the lion habitat. The Marjorie A. Foster Lion Conservation Center, slated for its groundbreaking ceremony on May 20, 2025, promises to triple the current lion space at the zoo.

Visitors to the zoo can look forward to three different viewing experiences designed with an accessibility-centered approach. This innovative design, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls, will offer unobstructed views of the lion pride, a crucial aspect in enhancing guest experiences.

The project is a part of the zoo's ongoing "Expand the Impact" capital campaign, which has a robust budget of $18 million aimed at enriching both animal lives and visitor experiences alike. Zoo representatives emphasize that this will be the first major exhibit launched under this campaign.

Strategically located in the Africa area, the new Lion Conservation Center will be situated between the Holmes Foster Event Center and the giraffe yard, promising an immersive safari-like experience for visitors. Set to open by summer 2026, the center will not only bolster the zoo's attraction but signal a turning point in wildlife conservation efforts.

In a statement released by the zoo, a spokesperson noted, "Our focus is on providing the best possible habitats for our animals while ensuring our guests have memorable experiences. The Lion Conservation Center embodies that vision. We cannot wait to welcome everyone to this remarkable space."

This development not only showcases the zoo's commitment to animal welfare but also aligns with broader trends in the zoological community focusing on conservation, education, and visitor engagement. As Blank Park Zoo embarks on this ambitious venture, it raises an exciting question to ponder: How can similar initiatives across the globe further enhance the synergy between animal conservation and public experience?
