Dinosaurs Come To Life At Woodland Park Zoo: A Jurassic Adventure Awaits
SEATTLE — Woodland Park Zoo’s Dinosaur Discovery is a one-of-a-kind experience that brings dinosaurs to life with incredible detail and scale. This exhibit captivates curious minds and allows visitors to step back into the Jurassic period, making it an unforgettable adventure for families.
As you stroll through the transformed Habitat Discovery Loop into a prehistoric forest, you will encounter 26 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. From the gentle giants to fierce predators, each dinosaur is crafted to precision, giving attendees a glimpse into the ancient world's creatures. Among the highlights of this experience is a robotic Stegosaurus, providing insights into the mechanics behind these lifelike exhibits.
I spoke with Dane Lund, the events Installation Supervisor at Woodland Park Zoo, who emphasized the importance and fascination of dinosaurs for children. "We have 26 dinosaurs, all kinds of different dinosaurs, from large to small," said Lund. This offers a diverse range that is sure to impress children and adults alike.
When asked why children are always fascinated by dinosaurs, Lund noted, "I think it's just because they're not here anymore, so there's sort of like this mystery about them." It’s fascinating to see how even young children display an extensive knowledge of these ancient creatures, which adds a layer of excitement to the exhibit.
The motivations behind showcasing dinosaurs in a zoo is twofold. Lund explained, "One is to educate people about animals that came before, the ancestors of some of the animals that we have here at the zoo. And two, is something that people don't get to see every day.” This educational aspect is key, encouraging visitors to appreciate the evolution of life on Earth and sparking a sense of wonder about the natural world.
Midway through the exhibit, visitors can dive even deeper into the past at an interactive Fossil Dig Station, allowing them to experience a hands-on approach to paleontology. This element of play enhances the educational experience and makes learning about dinosaurs thrilling.
The Dinosaur Discovery exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until September 1, with reasonable entry fees of $10 for non-members and $8 for members. Children two years and under get in for free, promoting inclusivity for families eager to explore.
