Experience The Thrills And Chills Of Reptiles At Staten Island Zoo’s Rattlemania
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Staten Island Zoo is back with its exhilarating event, “Rattlemania,” offering animal lovers an opportunity to bond with some of the scaliest creatures in the animal kingdom. This premier event, set to take place on April 26, 2024, is not only about excitement; it also serves an educational purpose, aiming to enlighten the public about reptiles and their vital role in our ecosystem.
Initially launched in February 2018, “Rattlemania” has grown exponentially, thanks to its captivating Reptile Wing that showcases a remarkable collection of reptiles and amphibians from six continents. With a footprint of 6,500 square feet, it remains one of Staten Island’s most visited attractions. This year’s event promises an interactive experience where visitors can witness live feedings and keeper talks featuring some of the Zoo’s most popular inhabitants, including Alligators, Gila Monsters, and various species of Cobras.
In an exciting development, the Staten Island Zoo has teamed up with Northwell Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) to enhance educational outreach programs surrounding the Reptile Wing. Ed Burke, Chief of Staff at the Staten Island Zoo, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that this partnership will allow them to conduct more engaging events, including “Rattlemania.” Through this collaboration, the hospital has also helped establish a new antivenom program critical for the safety of both the animals and the staff.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the event is the behind-the-scenes look at how the animal care team feeds and handles the snakes. Curator Cathy Eser shared the intricate feeding techniques used to ensure safety while keeping the snakes engaged. "Staying outside of striking distance is the name of the game,” she explained, demonstrating the careful process of feeding the creatures.
This event is also rooted in a rich history. The Zoo’s reputation soared under former Curator of Reptiles, Carl Kauffeld, who hosted excursions for rattlesnake collection in the wild during the 1940s. Today, the Zoo continues to prioritize the care and conservation of reptiles and their habitats.
“Rattlemania” not only entertains but also educates attendees about the importance of reptiles in maintaining ecological balance. It invites families and individuals to confront their fears about these misunderstood creatures. Paul Fede, a Junior Docent, has witnessed firsthand the joy on children’s faces as they learn about the animals. “It’s one of my favorite parts of my time at the Zoo,” he shared.
For those eager to join in on the fun, tickets are $60, allowing two children under 14 for free with a paid adult. “Rattlemania” runs from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and requires pre-registration, as spaces are limited. Free rattle maracas will also be provided to younger guests, adding an extra layer of fun to the experience. To register, visit statenislandzoo.org/rattlemania.
