Fort Wayne Zoo Achieves Certified Autism Center Designation
Fort Wayne, Indiana, is now home to a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility for all visitors. The Fort Wayne Zoo has officially received the Certified Autism Center designation, an accolade that highlights the zoo’s commitment to inclusivity and understanding of autism spectrum disorders.

This prestigious certification, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), is granted to organizations that successfully complete autism-specific training and a certification program. The program equips staff with vital skills and resources to effectively assist autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals, ensuring a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
Rick Schuiteman, Executive Director of the Fort Wayne Zoo, described the certification as a vital component of the zoo's ongoing efforts to foster accessibility. "We know this is one more tool that helps the Zoo not only make a great experience for guests, but also for current and potential employees as we strive to create a ‘Zoo for All’,” he expressed as he proclaimed the zoo's commitment to be an employer of choice for people with disabilities.
Schuiteman's pride in the achievement shines through as he reveals, "I am very proud that the Fort Wayne Zoo is the first zoo in the tristate area to become a Certified Autism Center." The IBCCES not only granted the designation but also conducted an onsite review that offered valuable insights into enhancing the zoo's facilities and developing meaningful sensory guides for guests.
For families who often face challenges in selecting suitable recreational activities, this certification could serve as a crucial lifeline. Myron Pincomb, Chairman of the IBCCES Board, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating it is a, "significant step towards creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all families." He acknowledged the zoo's dedication to improving the visitor experience and applauded its commitment to continuous training for staff.
The road to fostering inclusivity is paved with sensitive awareness and understanding, and the Fort Wayne Zoo is leading the charge in this vital area. As more organizations follow suit, it raises the question: how can other institutions improve their accessibility to better serve all members of the community?
