Giant Magnolia Snails Make Their Home At Longleat Safari Park
In a remarkable twist for wildlife conservation, the critically endangered giant magnolia snails have found a new home at Longleat Safari Park in the UK. Once believed to be extinct, these fascinating creatures are now at the center of a significant breeding conservation effort that could help preserve their dwindling population.
Originally rediscovered in southern Vietnam in 2012, these snails, which can grow up to 6.5 centimeters in length, have become a rare sight. With only approximately 300 left in the world, their presence at Longleat emphasizes the urgent need for conservation measures.

Conservationist Samantha Peeke, who oversees the snails, highlights the primary threats they face, including usage for food and the shell trade. "We are hoping they will start breeding, which will be incredible for the species," she notes. The commitment at Longleat includes creating a sterile environment for these snails, each fitted with an ID tag and kept at optimal temperatures ranging between 23°C to 27°C (73°F to 80°F).
While little is known about their dietary preferences in the wild, the snails at Longleat are fed a variety of fruits and vegetables, with mango reportedly being a favorite. "They are weighing in at around 100 grams, with our biggest measuring 66 mm," Ms. Peeke explains, indicating that they are at the ideal size and age for potential breeding.

Set to be displayed soon at Longleat's Animal Adventure area, these snails will allow visitors to appreciate their unique beauty. As Ms. Peeke puts it, "Having them at Longleat is wonderful as we can show our guests how we care for all animals, whatever their size." The presence of these snails in an accessible environment can foster greater public awareness and appreciation for marine conservation.
This exciting endeavor not only raises hope for the future of giant magnolia snails but also calls attention to broader conservation initiatives. How can we all contribute to protecting and preserving these extraordinary living beings? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
