Meet Sir Douglas: The Sweet Potato-Loving Western Tufted Deer at Minnesota Zoo
This summer, the Minnesota Zoo is set to unveil an exciting new multi-species habitat called the Red Panda Forest, which will be home to a delightful resident: a Western tufted deer named Sir Douglas. Sir Douglas recently made his move from Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio to his new abode in Minnesota. The zoo reported that he is currently acclimating behind the scenes, showcasing his preference for sweet potatoes, a treat that matches his curious personality. Known for his distinct sounds, such as clicks, barks, and whistles, Douglas is expected to become a favorite among visitors.
Douglas is still growing, with his adult tusks anticipated to reach about one inch in length. As excitement builds for the opening of the Red Panda Forest, he will soon be joined by a female deer. This pairing aims not only to enhance the visitor experience but to support the breeding efforts for the Western tufted deer, whose populations are declining.
The Red Panda Forest will provide a unique environment for three distinct species: Western tufted deer, red pandas, and the endangered red-crowned cranes. The habitat was designed to mimic the natural surroundings found in the eastern Himalayas, featuring lush bamboo forests, wetlands, and river valleys—a needed sanctuary for the animals that call it home.
Two red-crowned cranes, notable for their rarity, have also arrived from the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington D.C. These cranes, native to eastern Russia, China, Mongolia, and Japan, are facing significant threats due to habitat loss. Their presence complements the conservation efforts being undertaken at the Minnesota Zoo.
