Michigan Zoo’s Ambitious Vision: A Massive Waterfront Aquarium by 2031
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The John Ball Zoo is taking significant strides toward realizing its ambitious plan for a large-scale aquarium in Kent County. A projected opening date of 2031 not only reveals the zoo's commitment to expanding its offerings but also demonstrates the potential economic boost this project could bring to the region.
CEO Peter D’Arienzo outlined that while the project is still in the preliminary phases, he envisions an aquarium that will draw visitors from the Midwest and beyond, with an estimated economic impact of $2.9 billion over ten years. "We’re hoping to open in 2031 if everything stays on track," he noted.

The proposed aquarium is expected to feature at least 15 acres of land, ideally extending to 30 acres, to accommodate not just the aquatic exhibits but also necessary facilities such as pump rooms, filtration systems, and ample parking. The estimated water capacity will be between 2 to 3 million gallons, placing it among the largest aquariums in the United States.
Additionally, D’Arienzo emphasized the importance of creating distinct "zones" within the aquarium, with one specifically dedicated to showcasing Michigan’s natural wonders and its connection to the Great Lakes. The structure aims to be more than just an exhibition space; it will be an immersive experience for visitors.

The expected visitor demographic is heavily out-of-state, with projections indicating that 65% of the aquarium's guests will come from other regions, which highlights its potential as an essential tourism asset. Economic studies predict substantial job creation and tax revenue generation, enhancing the local economy.
While the excitement builds, funding remains uncertain. D’Arienzo has been engaging with various stakeholders about potential financial backing, explaining, "It’s gathering a lot of interest" due to its projected positive impact on the community. Local officials express optimism about the realization of the aquarium, with confidence that it can become one of the largest and most complex projects undertaken in Kent County.

As plans continue to unfold, D’Arienzo’s closing remark resonates with anticipation, stating, "It’s not a question of if it will happen, but when." The community waits eagerly to see how this aquatic vision will come to life, offering an enriching addition to both the zoo and the broader Grand Rapids area.
