Montgomery Zoo Set to Undergo Exciting Multimillion-Dollar Renovation
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - The Montgomery Zoo is poised for a transformation, with plans for over $4 million in renovations awaiting approval from the city council during their May 20 meeting. This significant investment not only promises to enhance the facility but also aims to elevate the overall experience for visitors of all ages.
The proposed renovation involves a complete overhaul of the zoo’s entrance, featuring four new ticket booths and an updated sign adorned with animal logos. According to Montgomery Zoo Director Marcia Woodard, this revamp is just the beginning of an ambitious plan to improve the zoo's overall layout and facilities.
Woodard elaborated on the comprehensive strategy, explaining, "It’s going to entail of course the gift shop, we also are moving some of our administrative officers up front as we grow. It’s going to have your restrooms, it’s going to have a plaza area with a top where people can relax before they go into the zoo. We’re going to add a mothers’ nursing room which we have not had." In essence, the renovation is not just about visual appeal; it's also centered on enhancing visitor comfort and convenience.
If the council greenlights the project, construction could kick off mid-June and is expected to span about a year. During this period, the zoo will continue to welcome visitors through a temporary entrance at the Mann Museum, as the current entrance will undergo demolition.
Councilwoman Marche Johnson, whose district includes the zoo, voiced strong support for the renovation, indicating its potential to significantly benefit the community.
