Sunset Zoo Celebrates A Milestone Birthday For Beloved Chimpanzee Susie

Sunset Zoo is gearing up for a heartwarming celebration in honor of Susie, the oldest living chimpanzee in human care within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). At 71 years old, Susie represents not just a remarkable achievement in her species' lifespan, but also a testament to the dedicated care she has received at the zoo since her arrival in 1974.

The birthday celebration, themed "The Queen Wears Black," will take place on June 12 at 11:45 a.m. at the chimp exhibit. The event will feature enrichment activities and birthday festivities that are sure to delight both Susie and her fans. As the matriarch of her troop, which includes other chimps like Julian, Hazina, Hususa, and Koto, Susie's importance extends beyond her age; she is the heart of the chimpanzee community at the zoo.

Scott Shoemaker, the Zoo Director, remarked, "With every year, Susie reminds us of the importance of long-term, high-quality animal care." Indeed, Susie's extended life—over three decades beyond the average chimpanzee lifespan in the wild—highlights the strides made in zoo care and animal welfare. She has become a beloved figure not just for her resilience but for the joy she brings to the zoo's visitors.

Under the meticulous care of the zoo staff and partners from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Susie receives specialized treatment tailored to her age-related health issues, such as cataracts and arthritis. This close-knit care team ensures that Susie's quality of life remains high, enabling her to continue enjoying her time outdoors and engaging with both guests and caretakers.

Caitlin Kenney, the animal curator, expressed bittersweet sentiments, saying, "While we celebrate this amazing milestone, we also know her age brings us closer to the time when we'll need to say goodbye. For now, we're cherishing every day we get to spend with her." This dual sense of celebration and reflection imbues the event with an emotional depth, as visitors are encouraged to come together and honor Susie's incredible journey.

As the nation watches Susie's birthday bash unfold, it raises a larger question about aging animals in human care: How can communities ensure such cherished beings receive the highest standards of care throughout their lives? Join the conversation and share your thoughts on Susie's legacy and how we can continue to support animals in similar circumstances.
