The Curious Case Of Cauliflower: Utica Zoo’s Beaver Siblings Steal Hearts And Headlines

In a twist as delightful as it is dramatic, the Utica Zoo’s newest residents—three North American beaver siblings—have captured the attention of animal lovers and the local community alike. But just as the zoo celebrated their arrival and the opening of a renovated habitat, a mysterious disappearance has everyone on high alert.

This is one of three beavers, born in the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley in 2023, who recently moved into a renovated beaver habitat at the Utica Zoo. The sibling trio with two sisters and a brother are named Cauliflower, Mustard and Tangerine.

Arriving just after International Beaver Day, Cauliflower, Mustard, and Tangerine—born at the Minnesota Zoo—were instantly embraced as ambassadors for their species. The zoo’s executive director, Andria Heath, remarked, “The return of beavers marks an exciting moment for the zoo and is so appropriate as they help us tell the story of Beaversprite, our education and conservation center located in Dolgeville.” The beavers' former home, the Minnesota Zoo, has provided valuable guidance in caring for this charismatic trio.

The timing of their arrival was bittersweet, following the loss of the zoo’s previous beavers, Frances and Jolene, highlighting the significance of this new chapter. Utica Zoo’s investment in habitat renovations underscores its commitment to animal welfare, creating spaces where beavers can display their natural engineering talents—gnawing, swimming, and, if given the chance, building their signature lodges.

However, after weeks of settling in, Cauliflower made a bold escape, prompting a Code Blue—a prepared response for non-dangerous animal breakouts. Despite sightings near the Rotary Pavilion and ongoing search efforts with humane traps and surveillance cameras, the adventurous beaver remains elusive. Utica Zoo’s general curator Jackie Gregory commented, “Beavers are known for their strong family bonds, but it is natural for young males to disperse around age two to find a mate and establish their own territory. Cauliflower will turn two in May, and although neutered, this behavior may be consistent with his natural instincts.”

The search now involves not only zoo staff but also a wide network of local agencies and conservation groups, reflecting both the public’s affection for Cauliflower and the broader importance of wildlife stewardship. The staff urges anyone spotting an unusually placed beaver near Utica to call the zoo’s dedicated tip line.

Beyond this drama, the story showcases the resilience and ecological value of beavers—a species once nearly extirpated in New York but now thriving thanks to conservation. Through initiatives like Beaversprite and the educational work of the Utica Zoo, these remarkable rodents continue to inspire awe and curiosity.
