Columbus trading the 4th overall pick: which is very important for the Blackhawk

A week away from the draft: Chicago Blackhawks’ strategy in the spotlight.

With the 2024 NHL Draft fast approaching in Las Vegas, general managers across the league, including Chicago Blackhawks’ Kyle Davidson, are strategizing to enhance their rosters through shrewd drafting and potential trades.

The stakes are particularly high for Davidson, as the Blackhawks look to secure talent that will bolster their future prospects.

The Columbus Blue Jackets, led by GM Don Waddell, have sparked interest across the league with the possibility of trading their 4th overall pick.

This move could significantly shift the draft dynamics, offering a pivotal opportunity for teams like the Blackhawks.

“There’s teams around us talking about trying to move back a little bit if you’re going to get a nice asset with it.” Waddell stated.

“We’re open [to moving the pick]. If we keep the pick, we’ll get a great player, and if we trade the pick, it’s going to have to be a great deal for us.”

With players like Ivan Demidov and Cayden Lindstrom projected to be available at that spot, the decision becomes critical.

Projects Lindstrom going to Columbus, a player who might not necessarily fit the Blackhawks’ immediate needs, as they have their sights set on securing Demidov with their 2nd overall pick.

The question lingers: has Ivan Demidov’s stock truly rebounded from past rumors concerning his performance and character? These elements make his draft position, and the Blackhawks’ interest in him, a focal point of draft speculation.

Should a later pick prove unsuitable for the Blackhawks’ strategy, Davidson might find it worthwhile to persuade Waddell to part with the 4th overall pick in exchange for adding another dynamic winger to the Blackhawks’ lineup. But, what would the cost be for such a trade?

Given the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets’ history of transactions, the possibility of a trade seems plausible. Davidson’s decision-making in this regard could be a defining moment for the Blackhawks as they aim to strategically rebuild and reposition themselves among the league’s best.

With the draft clock ticking, all eyes will be on these GMs to make moves that could redefine their teams’ trajectories for years to come.
