Bills called Raiders on Davante Adams: Is star WR interested in Buffalo?

Davante Adams wants out of Las Vegas and the Buffalo Bills are at least curious what it would cost to acquire the three-time All-Pro wide receiver from the Raiders.

On Wednesday night, Albert Breer of The MMQB reported that Buffalo has inquired with the Raiders about their star receiver.

“Teams involved in Davante Adams’ market have become convinced the Raiders star is focused on engineering a trade to the Jets,” Breer wrote on X. “The Bills and Steelers are among those who’ve inquired with Vegas on Adams, per sources.”

The Jets, of course, make the most sense in terms of potential trade partners for Adams as the wide receiver would then be reunited with Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback he played with on the Green Bay Packers from 2014-2021. While a reunion with Rodgers seems like the most likely destination, Breer isn’t ruling out a team like Buffalo.

“I’d put the Bills in the same category as the Saints (Adams did show some interest in going there, too), in that the cap implications would be tough to overcome in getting a deal done,” Breer added. “Obviously, Adams’ relationships with QBs play into his preferences.”

Playing with Rodgers or Carr may be high on Adams’ list, but it would be hard to imagine him being upset about playing with Josh Allen, one of the league’s elite quarterbacks. Adams’ contract would be Buffalo’s biggest hurdle in acquiring the veteran receiver. Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac recently broke down what it would cost to acquire Adams from the Raiders.

Buffalo does not have the cap space to take on Adams’ contract so the team would have to convince the Raiders to eat the majority of the receiver’s salary in 2024. The Bills could do this by offering the Raiders a package that includes a second-round pick as the team currently holds two (their own and the Vikings’ pick). Buffalo could then get out of Adams’ contract in the offseason.

That would be a steep price to pay for what would essentially be a one-year rental, but the AFC seems wide open this season. Going all-in on one season comes with risk, but the Los Angeles Rams showed just a few years ago that it can pay off with a Super Bowl title.

Whether or not the Bills are serious contenders for Adams, it should come as no surprise that Brandon Beane has at least inquired about Adams. The Bills GM has stated numerous times during his tenure in Buffalo that he is always looking for ways to improve the roster. Calling is simply Beane’s way of doing his due diligence.
