The pain never stops in Buffalo
Once again, the Buffalo Bills enter a new week with an extensive injury list. There’s a mix of good and bad news on Week 10’s first list, which means there’s a lot for the Bills to work through in the next three days before they head out on the road to play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
New Buffalo Bills names on the Week 10 Injury List
WR Keon Coleman (wrist) CB Kaiir Elam (shoulder) DB Cam Lewis (shoulder) DE Casey Toohill (knee)
Wide receiver Keon Coleman was injured in the final minutes of last week’s 30-27 win over the Miami Dolphins. As the rookie was attempting to snag a pass from quarterback Josh Allen safety Jordan Poyer launched himself at Coleman. Poyer’s helmet slammed into Coleman’s hand and wrist resulting in the Week 8 Pepsi Rookie of the Week signaling that he needed to be taken out and get medical attention immediately.
Coleman had X-rays at the stadium, and after the game, he was seen wearing a wrist brace. On Monday, Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters that they were waiting on additional testing. On Wednesday, before the Bills’ walkthrough practice, McDermott said that Coleman wouldn’t be practicing and admitted that it could be “more than just this week” that the wide receiver would need for recovery. McDermott also said that coaches were still waiting on additional information about the injury.
The other three players who are new to the injury list this week were all full participants on Wednesday. During Sunday’s game, cornerback Kaiir Elam was evaluated for an injured shoulder but later said that he had it “popped back in” so he could return to the game. It would be easy to assume that no ligament damage was done as the cornerback both finished Sunday’s game and is not missing any practice time now.
Buffalo Bills players now off injury list in Week 10
KR Brandon Codrington (previous designation: knee) S Damar Hamlin (previous designation: ankle)
Codrington was injured in a practice incident midweek last week. The injury didn’t slow him down as he had a large punt return against the Dolphins’ special teams unit on Sunday. Hamlin’s ankle injury also didn’t keep him out of Week 9, and now both Hamlin and Codrington are no longer in need of attention from the training staff.
Buffalo Bills players on the Week 10 injury list who will need monitoring
CB Christian Benford (wrist) WR Amari Cooper (wrist) FB Reggie Gilliam (hip) WR Cutis Samuel (pectoral)
The good news here is that Christian Benford was considered a full participant on Wednesday (everyone else was limited). Neither Benford, Cooper, or Gilliam were able to play in Buffalo’s Week 9 win. With Coleman likely missing playing time (Could we see him out until after the Week 12 Bye?), undoubtedly the Bills would like the two offensive weapons they went in search of — Samuel in the offseason and Cooper as a trade before Week 8 — to be on the field in Indianapolis.
Buffalo Bills players who are status quo on Week 9 injury list
QB Josh Allen (left hand) LB Terrel Bernard (pectoral/ankle) OL Spencer Brown (wrist) WR Mack Hollins (shoulder) CB Taron Johnson (forearm) DT DaQuan Jones (foot TE Dalton Kincaid (knee) TE Dawson Knox (ankle) TE Quintin Morris (shoulder hamstring) S Taylor Rapp (foot) LB Dorian Williams (knee)
Everyone above was a full participant on Wednesday, however the 11 names show just how much the Bills have been struggling with injuries again this season. The good news is that quarterback Josh Allen doesn’t have any new injuries listed after his name. Allen was caught on video checking his throwing hand after hitting it on a Dolphins defender in the first half of Sunday’s game.
Nineteen is a lot of injuries to be looking into throughout the week. And that number doesn’t even include players who are on Injured Reserve (Matt Milano, Tylan Grable, DeWayne Carter, and now Duwuane Smoot). It will be another busy week for the medical team and training staff at One Bills Drive.
