Buffalo Bills shut down Seattle Seahawks offense in performance that shows Championship character

Entering this week’s game, one of the biggest weaknesses for the Buffalo Bills defense was opposing rushing attacks. They were allowing 5.1 yards per carry (third-worst in the NFL), and were allowing 132.9 rushing yards per game (20th). For all their strengths in the secondary, stopping the run has been an issue.

Especially with the Seahawks missing star wide receiver DK Metcalf, there was plenty of reason to believe they would lean on running backs Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet.

Buffalo then proceeded to put their best run defense performance of the season, holding the Seattle running back duo to a combined 16 rushing yards on 12 rushing attempts.

And they did it all without star linebacker Terrel Bernard.

Buffalo’s defense was suffocating all game. To start, Seattle received the opening kickoff and was held to a three-and-out. Buffalo got the ball, marched 90 yards for a touchdown, then proceeded to hold the Seahawks to a second consecutive three-and-out. Even in their home stadium, the Seahawks were never able to get anything going.

The Seahawks only converted one of seven third down opportunities. They managed only 233 total yards of offense. Seattle, who entered the game leading the league in passing yards per game, threw for only 201 yards.

It was a dominant, and incredibly encouraging, showing from the Buffalo defense. If the Bills want to be considered as a contender to make a deep playoff run and finally bring a Lombardi Trophy to Western New York, being able to shut down the run is going to be key to doing so.

The worst loss that the Bills have on their record this year was against the Baltimore Ravens, who far and away lead the league in rushing. Good teams run the ball in the playoffs. Stopping the run is crucial.
