Fish with ‘one in a million’ condition making it all white pulled from icy lake

A strange-looking fish has been fished out of an icy lake after initially appearing frozen.

Caden Hurley’s photos of a chain pickerel caught in Sabin Pond in Woodbury, Vermont, went viral on social media after viewers observed the fish’s lack of colour.

The fish’s unusual coloration gave the impression that it had been stored in a frozen cooler, but the truth quickly became apparent.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife stated that, while the fish is healthy, it suffers from a condition known as Leucism, which affects its color.

In a Facebook post, officials of the organisation wrote: “Leucism is a pigment condition that affects some of an animal’s cells, resulting in pale colour that may be patchy or nearly complete across the body.”

The report went on to explain how the ailment affects the fish, claiming that the aquatic critter had normal-colored eyes for its species and verifying that it does, in fact, have Leucism.

“It doesn’t happen often in fish, so this is a very special catch,” VFW added.

The discovery of the Leucism-affected fish was not the only finding of aquatic creatures in recent days, following the discovery of more than 100 Portuguese man-of-wars washing up on a beach.
