Watch: Herm Edwards roasts ESPN for hyping up Cowboys

During a recent appearance on “First Take,” the now-ESPN analyst voiced his frustration with his employer’s seemingly never-ending affinity for the Dallas Cowboys, whom the network ranked sixth in its early 2023 NFL power rankings.

“We just have to talk about the Cowboys,” Edwards exclaimed. “They couldn’t make the top five, but they got to six, and now we’re going to talk about the top six teams. Are you kidding me? It’s always about the Cowboys.”

ESPN’s top 10 teams heading into 2023 are:

  1. Kansas City Chiefs
  2. Philadelphia Eagles
  3. San Francisco 49ers
  4. Cincinnati Bengals
  5. Buffalo Bills
  6. Dallas Cowboys
  7. Los Angeles Chargers
  8. Miami Dolphins
  9. Minnesota Vikings
  10. Jacksonville Jaguars

Edwards, who’s most famously known for his “You play to win the game,” rant in October 2002, vented about the attention Dallas was getting despite being bounced from the playoffs in the divisional round by the 49ers — a game in which Dak Prescott threw two interceptions and was thrown under the bus by the team’s official Twitter account afterward.

The Cowboys went 12-5 during the regular season, finishing as the No. 5 seed in the NFC. They beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 in the wild-card round of the playoffs before being eliminated the following week. Dallas has just four playoff wins over the last 25 years, and the team hasn’t advanced past the divisional round of the postseason since the 1995-96 season.
