Josh Allen surpasses Jim Kelly as Bills all-time TD leader

Josh Allen just recorded the 245th touchdown of his career.

Josh Allen has more touchdowns than any other player to wear a Buffalo Bills uniform. Ever.

In the second quarter of the Bills Sunday Night Football game on December 1, Allen hit wide receiver Mack Hollins to give the Bills a 21-3 lead just seconds before half time. With that touchdown, the Bills’ quarterback surpassed Hall of Famer Jim Kelly.

Allen scored his 245th career touchdown at the age of 28 and in his 105th career game. It took Kelly eleven seasons and 160 games to get his 244 touchdowns. For Allen, the fact that he’s a dual threat helped him get to the milestone faster than Kelly. Allen has 185 touchdowns through the air, but another 58 on the ground. For his predecessor, it was just 7 scores on the ground – including six different seasons with no rushing touchdowns.

Possibly the least surprised person at Allen’s success is Jim Kelly himself. The Hall of Fame quarterback who led the Bills to four straight Super Bowls said years ago that he expects for Allen to break all of his franchise records.

In fact, Kelly has been a part of making sure Allen understands what it takes to be successful in the NFL. In 2019, Allen’s first full season as the Bills’ starting quarterback, Kelly was a part of offensive meetings in which Buffalo was trying to help Allen develop his football personality.

As for Allen, he understands the history of the Buffalo Bills. He knows how much Jim Kelly meant to the franchise and the city itself. He knows that there are lessons to be learned, and he is here to learn them.

But today, December 1, 2024, the student has surpassed the teacher. The Buffalo Bills record books do, in fact, now belong to Josh Allen.
