Dak had proven to be a franchise-caliber quarterback, and — despite some shortcomings — it seemed like he was far from his ceiling.
But he hasn’t been the same since that payday and a career-threatening injury, so now fans aren’t that sold on him going forward.
That’s why there were some mixed reviews when ProFootballTalk shared the news of the Cowboys’ plans to extend his contract.

Stephen Jones claimed that the Cowboys are thinking about winning not only in 2023 but in the long run as well, stating that Prescott could see his career through with America’s Team.
Dak will be under contract for the next two seasons, grossing $49.1 and $52.1 million, respectively.
Notably, an extension would allow the Cowboys to restructure that deal and incur a lesser cap hit in 2023 and 2024, all while giving Prescott more money long-term.
So, financially speaking, it might make sense for the Cowboys to try and work out an extension with Prescott, but the timing isn’t exactly ideal, given his recent level of play.
The 30-year-old is no longer a dual-threat kind of quarterback, as he rarely takes off with his feet, and there were major concerns about his ball-placement and turnovers.
But the Cowboys don’t want to be stuck in QB purgatory, at least for now, so it seems like they’re more than confident rolling the dice with Prescott than trying to explore any other options for the foreseeable future.
