Packers bring former minor league MVP back at a different position

Alex McGough is back in Green Bay. The former USFL MVP as a quarterback signed with the Packers on Wednesday and will be a part of the practice squad once again. The team will list him as a wide receiver.

Track record

McGough, a seventh-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2018, has played as a quarterback for the Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans in the NFL. Between 2022 and 2023, he spent time with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL (which would merge with the XFL to form the current UFL).

McGough was the MVP, passing touchdowns leader, passer rating leader, and a champion with the Stallions in 2023.

The Packers signed him, and he spent the 2023 training camp and preseason with the team as a quarterback. He was waived, but signed back with the practice squad and spent the entire season as QB3 behind Jordan Love and Sean Clifford.

In 2024, after the Packers drafted Michael Pratt, Alex McGough was converted to a wide receiver to get a higher chance of making the roster.

However, he suffered an undisclosed injury and was waived. Now back healthy, McGough worked out for the New York Giants on Tuesday, but was brought back by the Packers after all.

Alex McGough will be the fourth wide receiver on the Packers practice squad. The group already has Julian Hicks, Cornelius Johnson, and Malik Knowles.
