Third time’s the charm for Bills running back

The Buffalo Bills wasted no time in their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive. After receiving the kickoff, the Bills marched down the field with a mix of running and passing plays.

They faced a crucial fourth down just past midfield but decided to go for it. Josh Allen connected with Khalil Shakir for a first down, keeping the drive alive.

Running back James Cook was instrumental in the drive, carrying the ball three times for 10 yards and adding two receptions for 23 yards. He capped off the drive with a six-yard rushing touchdown. Although Tyler Bass’s extra point attempt was blocked, the Bills took an early 6-0 lead.

This touchdown was significant for Cook, as it marked his third rushing touchdown of the season, setting a new single-season career-high. While Cook had a productive season in 2023, rushing for over 1,000 yards, he only found the end zone twice in each of his first two seasons.

Cook’s performance early this season suggests he is poised for a breakout year. Although not a traditional three-down back, Cook’s versatility as a receiver out of the backfield adds a valuable dimension to the Bills’ offense.

If the Bills can consistently move the ball into scoring position, expect Cook to see plenty of opportunities near the goal line. His ability to contribute as both a runner and receiver makes him a dangerous weapon in the red zone.

The Bills’ strong start on offense put immediate pressure on the Jaguars. To maintain control of the game, the Bills will need to continue their balanced offensive attack, running the ball effectively to control the clock and using play-action passes to keep the Jaguars’ defense off balance.
