Vikings could be in play to land one of free agency’s most popular players

One anecdote to the Minnesota Vikings’ woes against the pass could be solved through free agency.

The NFL’s free agency period officially begins on March 15. One player to keep an eye on as that date draws nearer is Steelers CB Cameron Sutton.

4 ambitious free-agent signings the Commanders could make in 2023

Cameron Sutton

Sutton is familiar with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores with both having spent last season together in Pittsburgh. Flores’ system features an aggressive style of play from the front seven and a secondary that can hold their own in man coverage.

Sutton certainly fits that bill.

In fact, ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler recently released an article linking the Vikings to the 28-year-old defensive back.

“Here’s another name to keep a close eye on: Cameron Sutton. The Pittsburgh corner just finished a two-year, $9 million deal but will be in a much higher tier this time. His name is circulating right now at the cornerback spot. Could see some NFC North action here — the Vikings or Lions make sense. Raiders, too.”

The Vikings have some work to do in order to create the necessary salary cap space to sign Sutton. The team could opt to trade away Dalvin Cook and restructure Harrison Smith’s contract in order to create some cap flexibility.

If Minnesota can fit Sutton’s contract, there is no reason to not aggressively pursue him. Sutton has logged 31 starts over the last two seasons with five interceptions in that time frame. He has the capability to erase mistakes made on the back end and stands to be an immediate upgrade to the Vikings’ 31st ranked pass defense in 2022.
