Why Dontayvion Wicks will become a star for the Packers in 2024

Dontayvion Wicks may become a household name this season.

If you look around the NFC North, it seems like every team has a top-five wide receiver in the NFL on the roster. The Chicago Bears have DJ Moore, the Minnesota Vikings have Justin Jefferson, and the Detroit Lions have Amon-Ra St. Brown. A casual fan may think the Green Bay Packers are at a severe disadvantage at the position compared to their division rivals.

The Packers don’t have a single receiver on the roster who has ever had a 1,000-yard season in their careers, but they probably have the best all-around receiving room in the NFC North. With top guys like Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Jayden Reed, the door opens for someone like Dontayvion Wicks, who will likely be listed as the fourth receiver on the depth chart, to get more favorable matchups during the season.

In his rookie season, Wicks hauled in 39 catches for 581 yards with four touchdowns, finishing third for the Packers in receiving yards last year and second in big-time receptions (catches of 20+ yards). In the playoffs, he made another touchdown catch.

Dontayvion Wicks is a breakout candidate for the Packers in 2024

Wicks showed flashes of his big-play ability in his rookie year against the Bears, Atlanta Falcons, and Los Angeles Chargers, and it has continued to grow into the 2024 preseason.

The Packers starters got to play the first drive of the preseason opener in Cleveland, and who else other than Wicks to make a loud statement in the short time the starting offense had in the game.

On just his second pass of the first drive, Jordan Love lofted a beautifully placed deep ball down the right sideline to Wicks, who had beat his man for a 65-yard touchdown catch. If Wicks continues to shine in the preseason and throughout the remainder of training camp, look out.

A breakout season is coming.
