Will Kurashev Keep His Spot on Blackhawks’ Top Line with Bedard?

The dawn of the Connor Bedard era in Chicago has already begun to reshape the Blackhawks’ roster. One player whose trajectory has been particularly impacted is Philipp Kurashev, the 24-year-old forward who surprised many by securing a two-year, $4.5 million contract through arbitration.

Last season, playing primarily alongside the phenom Bedard, Kurashev exploded onto the scene, notching 18 goals and 54 points in 75 games. He finished third on the team in goals, showcasing his enhanced playmaking abilities and responsible defensive game.

But with a trio of top-six forwards joining the roster this offseason, the question now looms: Will Kurashev remain Bedard’s wingman?

The Case for Keeping the Duo Together

The Kurashev-Bedard partnership has already proven fruitful. Their on-ice chemistry is undeniable, and both players have openly praised their synergy. Another season together could further solidify their connection.

Moreover, the Blackhawks’ improved depth, particularly with a potential new third-line center, could alleviate pressure and allow this duo to flourish even more. Adding a versatile player like Tyler Bertuzzi to the mix could create a balanced, high-octane line. This could be particularly beneficial for Kurashev, who is entering a contract year and aiming to establish himself as a core playmaker and scorer for the team.

The Case for a Change

However, there’s a counter-argument to be made. Some believe Kurashev’s success is intrinsically linked to playing alongside Bedard. They suggest another player might achieve similar, if not greater, results in that role. The addition of skilled veterans like Teuvo Teravainen opens up the possibility of an even more potent line combination alongside Bedard and Bertuzzi.

Kurashev has also demonstrated chemistry with other teammates, such as Jason Dickinson. This versatility could make him a valuable asset in a middle-six role, potentially alongside Taylor Hall or Ilya Mikheyev.

A Crucial Decision for the Blackhawks

The Blackhawks are at a crossroads. Do they stick with the proven chemistry of Kurashev and Bedard, allowing their partnership to evolve further? Or do they shake things up, exploring new line combinations that could unlock even greater potential within the roster?

As the new season approaches, the team’s decision on how to best utilize Kurashev will be pivotal. It’s a balancing act between nurturing his development alongside Bedard and maximizing the overall impact of the roster. The Blackhawks’ strategy will ultimately determine whether Kurashev continues his ascent as a top-line player or finds a new role in the team’s quest for success.
