The Green Bay Packers would ideally have already locked quarterback Jordan Love into a lucrative long-term extension after his impressive first season without Aaron Rodgers, which culminated in a Divisional Round playoff appearance. However, those negotiations are still ongoing.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Friday that General Manager Brian Gutekunst is keen to finalize a deal with Love before training camp kicks off. The implication is that Gutekunst is feeling some pressure to avoid the drawn-out contract saga that characterized Rodgers’ tenure.
Gutekunst himself has publicly expressed his desire to expedite the process. In a recent interview on 97.3 The Game, he stated, “We’re currently engaging in those conversations. Although these procedures aren’t always quick or straightforward, the good news is that both parties are on the same page about securing an extension before training camp.”
Love has also expressed optimism, expecting an extension to be finalized by the July 22 deadline for the start of the preseason camp.
But Love isn’t the only contract priority for the Packers. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark, entering the final year of his 2020 deal, is also seeking a long-term commitment from the team. Clark, a 2016 first-round pick and three-time Pro Bowler, has been a cornerstone of the Packers’ defense and has expressed a desire to remain in Green Bay beyond 2025.
During the mandatory minicamp, Clark voiced his confidence in the ongoing talks and his affinity for the organization. “It’s moving forward, and the dialogue has been positive” Clark said, adding that he’s “hopeful” about reaching a new agreement.
Gutekunst echoed Clark’s sentiments, telling Cheesehead TV, “Our intention is to keep Kenny a part of the Packers family. We’re optimistic about making that happen moving forward.”
Clark’s value to the Packers is undeniable. Over his career in Green Bay, he has amassed 379 tackles (216 solo) and 34 sacks, including an impressive 51 tackles (26 solo) and eight sacks in the most recent season.
